What is QPR?

QPR is a 1.5 hour training for any community member to learn basic skills to assist someone at risk for suicide. By asking a simple question, you can save a life.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer. These are 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

Remember, we are only responsible for what we know at the time we know it, not for things we will learn later on.

Question

Plan a time and place to ask the question.

1. "Have you been very unhappy lately?"

2. "Have you ever wanted to stop living?"

3. "Are you thinking about suicide?"

Persuade

Listen to what they have to say.

1. "Will you go with me to see a counselor?"

2. "Will you let me help you make an appointment?"

3. "Will you promise me...?"

Refer

Encourage a referral.

1. Take them to a professional yourself.

2. Hold them accountable to see a professional and keep the appointment.

3. Encourage them to accept help, even if it is for the future.
