We want to let you know that Ben Winchester, from the University of Minnesota, will be returning to Todd County for presentation on April 9, 2018 at the HILLTOP REGIONAL KITCHEN IN EAGLE BEND. The meeting will begin at 1:00 p.m. Ben was in Todd County in January 2017, presenting his research on the topic “Rewriting the Rural Narrative”. His presentation, sponsored by Citizens Against Drugs (CAD) was very well received, and post presentation surveys indicated that community members would like him to return for a more in depth discussion. We are inviting city and county officials, along with community members, to this return presentation. Here’s some background information on his January presentation.
Title: Rewriting the Rural Narrative-It seems the rural story has already been told. Small towns keep getting smaller.
Churches, schools, clinics, businesses, and now post offices, have closed their doors as the lucky few migrate out to the big cities. This deficit framework dominates how we discuss and envision our rural communities. However, the story of rural America since 1970 is rich and diverse, with positive trends occurring under the radar. Learn how these important positive changes have been occurring across the rural landscape that require us to rewrite the narrative of rural community change. Ben will offer time for audience reflection and idea generation. If you have questions about Ben, his work, or his upcoming presentation, please let us know! Please feel free to share this with others who may be interested.
